Shapes of Shahla Hosseini at Khak ( فارسی )

Writen By Fereydoun Ave

Divisions of surfaces, subtractions, erasures. They look like a problem in geometry elegantly solved. They look like walls of buildings and rooms being prepared to be painted. They are half relief, half flat surfaces crosshatched with chalk, gauze and lines. They are preoccupied with doing.

Doing as a means of meditation. They look like code/texts, visible and almost visible, shapes translated into flat and almost flat surface. Shahla Barzi Hosseini lives hermit like in a white house on top of a mountain in Kelardasht. She lives in mist and fog: Views seen and half seen and not seen in many shades of white surrounded by erosion and the natural process of returning to dust. Found bits and pieces surround her. As if she is a visitor from another planet excavating and trying to understand.

Her works are notations and diagrams of a scientific visionary trying to put order and to understand. In doing this there is silence and contentment with the new order. An elegant meditative exhibition of 12 canvas/plaster works by Shahla Barzi Hosseini was on view at the Khak Gallery from 16-28 November 2007.
